Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous and influential painters in the history of modern art. Born in the Netherlands in 1853, he spent much of his short life painting in various parts of Europe, including Provence, a region in southeastern France characterized by beautiful landscapes, lavender fields and picturesque villages. It was in Provence that Van Gogh spent some of his most productive and creative years, producing some of his most famous and recognizable works.
In this itinerary, we will explore the most important places in Provence that inspired Van Gogh in his art. We will venture to cities such as Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where Van Gogh spent much of his time in Provence. Later, we will also visit other places that influenced his work, such as Les Baux-de-Provence, Avignon, Fontainebleau Castle, and the lavender fields of Valensole. Get ready to discover the natural and cultural beauty of Provence through the eyes of the famous artist.
Day 1:
Arrive in Arles, where Van Gogh spent many months painting and writing letters to his brother Theo. Visit the Vincent van Gogh Arles Foundation to view the artwork he painted while in Provence.
Day 2:
Visit the Place du Forum, where Van Gogh painted the famous painting “Café Terrace at Night.” Then, visit to the church of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where Van Gogh was admitted to a mental hospital and painted some of his most famous works, such as “Starry Night.”
Day 3:
Excursion to Les Baux-de-Provence, where Van Gogh went to paint the Alpilles and limestone rocks. Then, visit to the city of Avignon, where Van Gogh spent a short time and painted several works, including “La Berceuse.”
Day 4:
After that, we proceed to visit Fontainebleau Castle and the lavender fields of Valensole, where Van Gogh painted his most famous works of sunflower and lavender fields.
Day 5:
Finally, the last day is devoted to visiting the town of Nîmes, where Van Gogh painted several works, including “L’Arlesienne” and “La Maison Jaune.”
