The tournament is part of the ATP Tour 250 category and is played on indoor concrete courts. The tournament was created in 1993 by former tennis player Jean-François Caujolle, who wanted to bring a world-class event to his hometown. Since then, six Frenchmen have won the Marseille trophy: Guy Forget in 1996, Fabrice Santoro in 1999, Arnaud Clément in 2006, Gilles Simon in 2007 and 2015, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2009, 2013, and 2017, and Michael Llodra in 2011.
The Open 13 Provence is one of five French tournaments on the ATP calendar and is one of the most important stops on the European indoor circuit. In addition to French tennis players, other great champions have also triumphed in Marseille, such as Boris Becker, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
