Provence is internationally known thanks to the painters who immortalized its landscapes. Come discover Marseille, Arles, Saint-Rèmy-de-Provence, Aix-en-Provence and Saint Tropez in the footsteps of artists such as Van Gogh and Cezanne.
Thanks to this itinerary you can retrace the footsteps of great artists and painters such as Vincent Van Gogh and discover the places that inspired their works. Visit Marseille, Martigues, Arles, Saint-Rèmy-de-Provenxe, Aix-en-Provence, all the way to Saint Tropez to enjoy the art these Provençal cities have to offer.
Program
Day 1: Marseille
Marseille will surprise you with its combination of heritage and modernity starting with the small port L’Estaque, associated with three periods: impressionism, cubism, and fauvism. Continue the tour to the le Panier neighborhood, where the cathedral stands, and visit the Regards de Provence museum, dedicated to Provençal paintings, located opposite the Mucem. Pass through the old port to continue to the Longchamp Palace and visit the fine arts museum.
In the afternoon head to Martigues, called “the Venice of the South,” a village that has attracted many artists. Enjoy a tour of the town among the canals in a boat.
Day 2: Arles
Arles, the city of Van Gogh, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site both for its Roman monuments and for being a stop on the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela. Walk among the sites of the paintings and enjoy a visit to the Van Gogh Foundation.
Day 3: Saint-Rèmy-de-Provence
In Saint-Rèmy-de-Provence visit the room in the psychiatric institution where Van Gogh was hospitalized for a year and where he painted 150 works, the most famous of which include “the starry night.”
Visit the Estrine Museum, a museum of modern and contemporary art, and finally explore the town’s picturesque landscapes.
Day 4: Aix-en-Provence
Head to Aix-en-Provence to visit Cezanne’s workshop. Also enjoy a tour of the local arts and culture center located in the Caumont Hotel. Take a stroll through the city streets and if you have time left over, treat yourself to a visit to the Vasarely Foundation.
Day 5: Saint Tropez
Admire the city lights that inspired some of the exponents of pointillism, such as Paul Signac, and stroll through the famous harbor. A guided tour will introduce you to a true Provençal village deeply rooted in the sea and its heritage.
